City of Sterling HeightsLocation and History

Sterling Heights is a northern suburb of Detroit and is located about 23 miles north of the downtown area. The township itself is 6 square miles, but a very small part of Utica falls just inside the north end boundary lines. View map for location of  Sterling Heights.

The area welcomed many residents from the City of Detroit after the War of 1812. By 1880, it was a prosperous rural area.

Area Stats

According to the 2000 United State Census the population was 124,471 and it had 47,547 housing units.

Housing

In Sterling Heights homes average in price from $25,000 to $410,000 and condos from $15,000 to $250,000. The age of the homes vary from the late 1800's to brand new subdivisions built in 2009. According to stats from the local MLS in 2009, there were 831 homes and 252 condos sold with an average sales price of $129,215 for homes and $72,740 for condos. The average market time 68 days for homes and 77 days for condos. Due to the slow down in new building, 19 lots were sold with an average price of $35,526.

Travel

M-53 is the major freeway through Sterling Heights  and it runs north and south. However, there are several major roads that run the same way. Crossing over from east to west are Hall Rd. M-59 on the far north end and 14 Mile on the far south end. With Mile roads every mile. You will find easy access to both major expressways I-94 and I-75. Sterling Hts. borders Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren and Troy in Oakland County.

Shopping

As for shopping Sterling Height is home to Lakeside Mall and not far from Partridge Creek , the Village of Rochester Hills and Macomb Mall. There are also several strip centers in the area with large chains and numerous restaurants. 

Education

Sterling Heights consists of 2 school districts Utica on the north and Warren Consolidated on the south. It is also within minutes of Macomb Community College where you can receive an associates degree and through Macomb University a bachelor's and master's degree. Also in neighboring Rochester, Michigan you will find Oakland University which offers 132 baccalaureate degree programs and 117 graduate degree and certificate programs. 

Hospitals

Henry Ford Macomb Hospital is located the city over in Clinton Township. It offers 435 beds, along with a heart center, cancer center, birthing center and more. There are also several medical center in the city.  Children's Hospital of Michigan Stilson Specialty Center  is also located in Clinton Township and offers all types of pediatric specialties. Just north in Macomb Township is the Beaumont medical center along with several other large hospitals throughout Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County.

Theater

Macomb Center for the Performing Arts is located just south in Clinton Township and features various shows like the Letterman, Ann Margaret, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Lou Rawls and the Temptations. On the grounds of Oakland University you will find The Meadow Brook Theatre which also offers high quality entertainment.

Extras

Across from the city offices is Dodge Park and Freedom Hill which offers plenty of summer concerts is also located in the city limits. Sterling Hts.has a walking path along 16 Mile that leads to Metro Park and north in to Riverbend. There are also several golf courses  near by with a few being right in Sterling Hts.
