Location and History
Shelby Township is located in the north west half of Macomb County, Michigan. It is located about 30 miles north of downtown Detroit. The township itself is 6 square miles but a small part of Utica is just inside the southern line. View map for location of Shelby Township
The area was surveyed and opened for general land sales in 1818. A township government was organized in 1827. According to the 2000 United State Census the population was 65,159 and it had 25,265 housing units.
Housing
In Shelby Township homes average in price from $17,000 to $825,000 and condos from $19,500 to $258,500. The age of the homes vary from the late 1800's to brand new subdivisions built in 2009. According to stats from the local MLS in 2009, there were 503 homes and 170 condos sold with an average sales price of $187,054 for homes and $99,072 for condos. The average market time 87 days for homes and 81 days for condos. Due to the slow down in new building, 8 lots were sold with an average price of $58,813.
Travel
M-53 is the main through way into Shelby Township and it runs north and south with easy access to 26 Mile on the north end and Hall Road /M-59 on the south end and 23 Mile in between. There are also several other main roads running north and south. It
also has access to both major expressways I-94 and I-75. It borders Washington Township, Sterling Heights, Rochester and Macomb.
Shopping
As for shopping there are 3 large shopping malls within 10 -20 minutes - Lakeside Mall, Partridge Creek and the Village of Rochester Hills. There are also several strip centers in the area with large chains and numerous restaurants and large name brand stores.
Education
Shelby Township consists of 3 school districts. Almost all of Shelby is covered by the Utica school district but a small section is in Romeo and Rochester. You are within 10 minutes of Macomb Community College where you can receive an associates degree and through Macomb University a bachelor's and master's degree. Also in neighboring Rochester, Michigan you will find Oakland University which offers 132 baccalaureate degree programs and 117 graduate degree and certificate programs.
Hospitals
Henry Ford Macomb Hospital located in nearby Clinton Township offers 435 beds, along with a heart center, cancer center, birthing center and more. Children's Hospital of Michigan Stilson Specialty Center is also located in Clinton Township and offers all types of pediatric specialties. Just west in Macomb Township is the Beaumont medical center along with several other large hospitals throughout Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County.
Theater
Macomb Center for the Performing Arts is located just south in Clinton Township and features various shows like the Letterman, Ann Margaret, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Lou Rawls and the Temptations. On the grounds of Oakland University you will find The Meadow Brook Theatre which also offers high quality entertainment.

There are walking paths in and out of Shelby Township and right into Stony Creek Metro Park There are also several small parks and thanks to the Shelby DDA the are plenty of things to including several golf courses in the area including right in Shelby.
