Location - Sterling Heights is a northern suburb of Detroit and is located about 23 miles north of the downtown area. The township itself is 6 square miles, but a very small part of Utica falls just inside the north end boundary lines.
History -Sterling Township welcomed many residents from the City of Detroit after the War of 1812. By 1880, it was a prosperous rural area.
Area Stats - According to the 2000 US census the population is 124,471 and it has 47,547 housing units.
Housing - Homes average in price from $120,000 to $400,000 but there are a few homes currently for sale over $400,000. There are a few homes that date back to the early 1900's but most homes were built in the 60's through today. Brick, aluminum/vinyl and many styles. According to stats from the local MLS in 2006, there were 1,095 homes and condos sold with an average sales price of $195,530 for homes and $138,091 for condos. The average market time was 58 days for houses and 71 days for condos.
Travel - Many main roads run thru and around the city, the largest being M-53 on the east & the M-59 on the north end, which helps you get to the two major interstates - I-75 and I-94.
Shopping - As for shopping there are 2 very large shopping malls, one in adjacent city, Macomb Mall & on the northern end of Sterling Heights is Lakeside Mall along with several small strip malls and many large chains. There are also several near by counties with shopping malls.
 Education - Sterling Heights has 2 school districts. Utica covers over 1/2 of the city and the other half is Warren Consolidated. Macomb Community College is near by where you can get an associates degree, along with Macomb University where you can get a bachelor's and master's degree. There are also several more colleges in the area.
Hospitals - St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital is located in the nearby township of Clinton Township and in Warren is Bi-County and St. John Macomb. Although there are many hospitals in and around the area.
Theater - Macomb Center for the Performing Arts features various shows like the Letterman, Ann Margaret, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Lou Rawls and the Temptations.

Extras - Across from the city offices is Dodge Park. Freedom Hill is also located in Sterling Heights. The city also has a walking path along 16 Mile that leads to Metro Park. There are also several golf courses near by.
