Location - Shelby Township is a northern suburb of Detroit and is located about 30 miles north of the downtown area. The township itself is 6 square miles, but a very small part of Utica falls just inside the south end boundary lines. History - Shelby Township was surveyed and opened for general land sales in 1818. A township government was organized in 1827. The Shelby Township Historical Committee has everything you would like to know about Shelby township's history It has seen many, many changes and today you will find signs that recognize The History of The Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal, which runs through the township.
Area Stats - According to the 2000 US census the population is 65,159 and it has 25,265 housing units.
Housing - Homes average in price from $110,000 to $700,000 according to the 2006 MLS stats but there are currently some homes for sale over $700,000 and a few even higher. The age of the homes vary from the early 1900's to 2007 with various styles. Although, most of the homes were built after 1960. In fact many new subdivisions are still being built. According to stats from the local MLS in 2006, there were 432 homes sold and 136 condos sold with an average sales price of $262,375 for homes and $158,735 for condos. The average market time was 70 days for homes and 80 days for condos. There were 18 vacant lots sold ranging from $70,000 to $200,000.
Travel - Several main roads run thru and around the township, the largest being M-53 expressway, which helps you travel north and south. Two major interstates are close by I-75 and I-94.
Shopping - As for shopping there are 2 very large shopping malls in adjacent cities, Macomb Mall & Lakeside Mall along with several small strip malls and many large chains. You'll also find many other places to shop in nearby communities.
Education - Shelby Township has 3 school districts school districts. Utica covers most of the township but a small part is serviced by Romeo & Rochester Hills. Macomb Community College where you can get an associates degree is within driving distance, along with Macomb University where you can get a bachelor's and master's degree. There are many more colleges in and around the area.
Hospitals - St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital is located in the nearby township of Clinton Township, although there are many hospitals in and around the area.
Theater - Macomb Center for the Performing Arts features various shows like the Letterman, Ann Margaret, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Lou Rawls and the Temptations.

Extras - On the north end of Shelby is Stoney Creek Metro Park. On the south end is Shelby recreation area and several golf courses are also near by. There is also a nice park at the township offices.
